Thanks to the S.S. Badger, the ship has cut down travel time for Merrill Iron and Steel in Schofield.

The S.S. Badger is the largest traveling car ship on Lake Michigan. The ship also carries cars and passengers. Steel beams from Merrill Iron and Steel are transported to Ford Motor Company in Wayne Michigan.

"It saves a little bit on fuel with raising fuel prices it sounds like its gonna be increasing our bottom line," says Fred Schwalbach, product manager.

Merrill Iron and Steel transports the beams two days a week. Workers at the company say they're happy with the change because it cuts back on driving time, as a result, they're able to keep up with DOT driving regulations.

"We get a lot further at night, avoid Chicago traffic," says Todd Borchardt, truck driver.

Drivers from Merrill Iron and Steel will continue to ship between 80 to 100 oversized loads during the next 8 to 10 weeks.
