Fair Food

Calories are what's in those deep-fried Twinkies, Elephant Ears and corn dogs, but then again, who out there believed anything from the fairgrounds is a health food?

Of course, we all know that something that starts off as a sweet, is deep fried, then topped with chocolate syrup and whipped cream is bad for you, but we know that and as long as it's not what you eat every day, a little here and there is fine.

"And everything in moderation," said Jennifer Mikulich, Aspirus Dietician. "So when you splurge you don't do the corn dogs, cheese curds and everything all at once, you pick one of your favorites and that's what you do."

If you are planning on splurging this weekend, we've got some more good news to help you justify your binge. Depending on where you get your food, the money could be going to a good cause.

The Breakfast Optimist Club sells cheese curds at the fair and gives the proceeds to organizations like the Boys and Girls Club.

"It's a real good cause and we'd just like people to stop by and say hello, and when they buy some food it's going back into the area," said Dennis Maxson of the Breakfast Optimist Club.

If you do pack in some extra calories at the fair, you can help yourself by working it off before you even leave the grounds .

Dieticians suggest taking a few laps around Marathon Park before getting in your car to burn off all those goodies.
