We all know making a few small changes can help the environment and increase the spare change in our wallets.

That's why so many are going green.

For the last few years Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church has been has been looking for ways to save money and go green.

"We talk a lot about environmental issues, protecting the earth and taking care of god's green earth. When we are walking the walk we can talk about it more freely," says Rev. Susan Zencka.

Pastor Zencka says the structure of the 115 year old church made it difficult to figure out where to begin making changes.

So in 2007, the church decided a to get an energy audit.

"They looked at the heating insulating lighting and identified places that didn't have proper insulation." says Cynthia Porter of the Building and Grounds Committee.

Porter says the step by step analysis showed them what changes would equal the biggest savings.

"Changing light bulbs in a place like this where some of the space only get used a short time doesn't make as big of a difference as sealing up holes."

They did some weather stripping, replaces a furnace with a more energy efficient one.

One of the biggest changes was putting in new insulation in a large storage closet and some attic space in March of 2009.

Now, a year later they've saved about 800 dollars.

"This was the biggest decrease in heating costs since we have been keeping records."

And they don't plan on stopping there.

This Spring, they are planning to insulate a basement stairway that comes off the back of the church and leads outside.

Porter says the entire project cost the church $8,600 but they were able to get a $326 grant from Focus on Energy to help pay for some of the upgrades.
