As the snow across the state melts away and spring nears, wildfire season is fast approaching.
Saturday more than a hundred northern Wisconsinites are prepared to fight them.
The UWSP Fire Crew hosted a Basic Wild land Firefighting Course in Plover.
"Our crew members along with 4 people from the DNR are teaching them at different stations and this goes along with the classroom portions they had learned earlier this week, " says Bryanna Kuhlman Public Information Officer for the UWSP Fire Crew.
The purpose of this activity is to provide community members with hands on experience battling wildfires.
"Basically we have different stations, we teach them about putting out fires and just basic fire fighting," says Ben Nacker, Treasurer for the UWSP Fire Crew.
Nacker is one of the students helping run the training exercises. His job is to watch the fires to make sure they stay contained and don't spread.
Using different flammable materials the students set several piles of debris on fire.
Then the participants worked together at extinguishing the brush fires.
Even though the students trained on Saturday won't be rushing into buildings to put out fires their skills will be put to good use - especially in our area.
"It's very important here because of the drought and the more hands that can help out it will be better for the DNR," says Kuhlman.
The Fire Crew hosts a number of training sessions through out the year.
