An arsonist is on the loose, setting fire to homes, garages, and vehicles in Stevens Point.

Authorities want your help in solving the string of arsons.

35 suspicious fires occurred from May 2008 to early this week in Stevens Point.

One blaze occurred in Plover, and there are no suspects.

The Stevens Point fire and police departments are working with outside agencies including the State Department of Criminal Investigation to find whoever's responsible.

But until they do, they want Stevens point area residents to look out for any suspicious activity, to make sure they don't become the next victim.

The fires have ranged from significant, one home burned to the ground, to not so significant.

But they're all happening in the dark, late at night or in the early morning.

Many fires burned in areas North of Main Street and East of the river, some in areas where college students live.

Stevens Point authorities want the public to form neighborhood watch groups, and keep an eye out for things or people that seem out of place.

Even if you're not sure it's important, you should report anything out of the ordinary.

"We're also looking to take steps to increase patrols and presence in the neighborhoods and as another patrol we're asking that neighbors be extra vigilant," says Chief Kevin Ruder, with the Stevens Point Police Department.

He warns to lock your home, garage, and vehicles.

You should also lock away any combustible or flammable materials.

The most recent blaze was at an apartment building on Stanley Street, a man found a burning bag of garbage right inside his doorway.

It was next to a propane tank, which fire crews say the arsonist placed there, after removing it from a grill outside.

Here in Wausau there were a string of unsolved arsons, specifically to garages last November.

But authorities say there is no evidence linking those fires to these.
