After hearing the testimony against him, Scott Schmidt took the stand to testify at his own murder trial.
Schmidt is on trial for the murder of his estranged wife, Kelly Wing-Schmidt, and the attempted murder of her mother. Investigators say Schmidt shot both women last April outside Kelly's home in Grand Chute.
The defense doesn't dispute Schmidt shot them but does dispute that shooting Kelly was first-degree intentional homicide.
The very first question Schmidt's own attorney asked him on the stand: "Did you shoot your wife?"
"That day I did," Schmidt answered. "I don't know who that person was that day, but after everything I heard and was told by the cops, it was me."
"I remember pushing the door open and I remember hearing a shot, but I don't remember shooting her."
Schmidt says the gun went off in a moment of passion during an argument that was getting physical. He was then confronted by Kelly's mother, Barbara Wing, who was shot in the chest but survived.
The prosecution will question Schmidt Wednesday.
Depending on how long the cross-examination and the closing arguments take, the jury could have this case by Wednesday afternoon.
