The proposed route for the Arrowhead-Weston line would go through parts of the Nine Mile recreational area, which is owned by the county.

Tuesday, the county board voted 22 to 9 to allow staff members to negotiate with American Transmission Company over the proposed route.

Mark Williamson is vice president of major projects at ATC. He says the board made the right decision.

"The alternative is to put it on private property and people don't like that so they'd prefer it on public land whenever possible."

But opponents like Tom Kreager of save our unique lands, say they don't want to see new power lines built on public or private land and were hoping that the board would vote against negotiations.

"I think that had it been a vote in our favor that the issue of Arrowhead-Weston would be well on its way to its death."

The proposed route would go through about 1,100 feet of Nine Mile.
