The playgrounds are empty, no more sounds of school bells for a few months. Summer break is in full swing for kids, and while they're outside enjoying the sun and fun, area school officials remind parents to keep kids' minds active this summer.

Studies show that if kids don't keep their brains active throughout the summer, they could lose one to three months of what they learned from the previous school year and fall into the category known as the summer slide.

"We can take advantage of the time we have with students to a greater extent when we don't have to go back and review things that we thought they already learned," says Nancy Caskey, Wausau School District Director of Elementary Education.
