Some international students at Northcentral Technical College are leaving their mark on the area's communities.
They're a part of a new organization called the Breaking Boundaries Optimist Club.
For decades, optimist international has been helping communities bring out the best in kids through community service.
The clubs in our area are no exception.
The new club for international students is being sponsored by the Wausau Noon and Everest Optimist Clubs.
Wausau's club has about 140 members, and since 1960 they have been giving away dictionaries and sponsoring events like the ice fishing derby.
"We are hoping that working with them here in the area for two years they'll take ideas to their countries to help the youth of their community," Romey Wagner, Club Member
The new club already has nearly 40 members.
The President Julio Paiz says it includes students from Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Egypt and Latin America.
"The idea of working with the children of the community is the same idea as working for ourselves. We were children too and no one probably helped us and did activities for us. So just the idea of working for the community is good and I encourage them to join us and start working for the community," says Paiz.
He says the work they are doing here will give them the skills they need to be leaders in their homelands.
They are hoping more students will consider participating in the group.
