Wisconsin lawmakers want to stop anyone from using or making a phony college degree, by making it a crime.
They want to stop the spread of 'diploma mills,' which sell phony degrees to students who perform little work.
The state Assembly's Colleges and Universities Committee held a hearing on the bill today.
In the bill, a person could be fined $1,000 for using a degree from a 'diploma mill.'
And anyone who manufactures a fake degree, could see jail time.
A local business specialist says it's never a good idea to blow things out of proportion on a resume, especially when an employer can double check what you put down.
"When they do a background looking for your educational references and degree completions if you haven't done that it automatically shows the resume is fraudulent," says Manpower Business Specialist Kathy Croker.
The state committee will vote on the bill in the next few weeks.
