Lawmakers are hoping to pass a bill that would make your Wisconsin honey, all natural.
The proposal would require certain state standards before a product can be labeled honey.
Bruce Paquette is a proud Wisconsin beekeeper of more than 40 years.
And says just as Wisconsin milk and cheese have a standard to uphold, so should his sweet treat.
Especially when growers in other countries aren't as truthful about their honey.
"Some of them will cut the honey or dilute it with water or fructose commonly like a syrup which is a sweetener which reduces the value and the retailer is not getting what they think is a true naturally produced honey," says Paquette.
He says it's hard to compete, when other companies are selling their product at a lower price, because it was make cheaper.
Representative Louis Molepski Jr., is a backer of the new bill, which would require anyone selling honey produced in the state, to have their products certified as pure honey through lab testing by health officials.
"It's a concern for people eating honey it's a concern for the consumer wanting to get full value for the dollars they spend," says Molepski.
Any person who violates the law, could be fined up to $1,000.
Representative Molepski says the bill would most importantly protect beekeepers like Bruce, and other honey growers in the Badger State.
"And that when he puts his label on that, it's from the Amherst area and it's from Wisconsin, that he will actually afford himself of a higher price and tell consumers whats in it is 100 percent honey," says Molepski.
The Assembly passed the bill last week.
Now, it will go through the Assembly's Agriculture Committee, before it heads to the state Senate.
