Greg Gubernot is headed to trial, charged with murdering his girlfriend Theresa Still. At a hearing Tuesday (1/26), a judge ruled there is enough evidence showing a felony happened.
In court, investigators described surveillance video showing Greg Gubernot driving Theresa Still's car the same morning her daughter reported her missing.
Theresa Still's family was already in tears before Gubernot even walked into an Eau Claire County courtroom Tuesday afternoon and before District Attorney Rich White laid out his evidence against him.
"It was my friend, Theresa Still,” said Pamela Marg, Theresa’s co-worker, describing a photograph investigators showed her of a woman's body.
Marg stared at Gubernot as she told the court about identifying her friend's body. Another witness said he talked to Gubernot on the phone the Sunday night Theresa was last seen.
"During the conversation, he stated he was fighting with Theresa and she wanted him out of the house," said Bradley Simons. “He was talking about money this, money that and he said he wouldn't have to worry about her kicking him out anymore."
The district attorney called eight witnesses; five of them investigators. Chuck Wysocky with the Altoona Police Department said surveillance video from an Altoona gas station shows Gubernot driving Still's car in the early morning hours the same day she didn't show up for work.
"Prior to putting the gas cap back on, he removed something from his pocket that appeared to be a cloth or rag of some sort and wiped that gas cap off prior to replacing it”, said Wysocky.
Wysocky also said Gubernot used his elbow to shut the gas lid and the driver’s side door before driving in a direction away from the home he shared with Still.
A deputy found Still's car at Target in Eau Claire two days later. Another investigator testified that Still's DNA was found in the trunk. And another said her body was found in Adams County and that she was wearing no shoes and a tank top.
None of Still's family and friends wanted to comment after the hearing. The district attorney says they're dealing exactly as any family would in the situation.
"These things are never easy, both in terms of evidential issues and emotional issues," says White.
A pathologist says Theresa Still was strangled and beaten to death.
The defense called no witnesses and offered no argument. Defense Attorney Peter Thompson had no comment after court.
A date for the trial is not yet set.
