The greater Wausau area is a little closer to having 24-hour fire and ambulance protection. A committee studying merger possibilities says consolidation is feasible.
Wausau is the only city with full time fire protection.
Under the plan Wausau would merge with the Rothschild, Schofield, Weston, and Rib Mountain fire departments. The new department would have 111 firefighters.
Property owners would pay $1.88 per $1,000 of assessed value.
That is more than all the communities currently pay, except for Wausau. Wausau homeowners currently pay $2.35 per $1,000.
It us now up to local governments to vote on the merger.
