The Aqua Skiers of Wisconsin Rapids are getting ready to perform in front of local crowds again this summer. The water ski shows will resume for the season on Thursday at Lake Biron.
They've been competing in the toughest level of State Competition since 1986 and beat out dozens of teams to take the title most recently in 2001. That year they had 52 water skiers in formation at one time.
State Tournament Director Maggie Muleski says, "You see everything from bare footing to jumps, ballet lines with 26 girls and 4 and 5-high pyramids".
Every ski show is a mix of crazier stunts and graceful formations and they take pride in how far the team has come since its beginning in 1959.
"There's nothing else quite like it," says the team's announcer, Mark Massoglia, "so many things could go wrong with so many different personalities but when it's show time, things just click".
The Aqua Skiers host 26 other teams competing in the State Tournament at Lake Wacheeza, July 15-18. Once again, the team is gearing up for a win. They won back to back Division 1 State titles in 2000 and 2001.
To see the team for yourself, head over to Lake Biron on any Thursday or Sunday night for one of their performances and prepare to be entertained.
