The Marathon County Sheriffs Department is having a much slower start to the new year, but in this case that's a very good thing. Last nights New Year's Eve was treated like a regular weekend day with a couple extra deputies brought in just to be safe. Thankfully the evening turned out much like any ordinary weekend.
"it was pretty much a routine weekend even though it was a Thursday night a few people were arrested for operating while intoxicated, a few minor crashes, vehicles in the ditch, nothing out of the ordinary," Lieutenant Frank Hanousek said.
Hanousek said that on a normal weekend they see numbers matching that with 3 or 4 arrested for driving while impaired and a few minor accidents such as vehicles that have gone into the ditch.
He credits increased enforcement over the entire 2009 year and people taking advantage of the safe ride program and using designated drivers.
