The New Year isn't the only thing that's making tonight magical.
There will actually be a blue moon in the sky.
A blue moon is the second full moon to occur in a month.
This event happens once, in every two to three years, but on rare occasions, it can happen multiple times in a year.
"The blue moon, if you define it as an extra full moon per month, you can have more than one blue moon per year. In 1999, in January we had two full moons, in February we had none, and then two full moons in March," says Aaron Steffen, Assistant Professor at UWMC.
The professor says there's nothing special about a blue moon, other than it being an extra moon per month.
The last time we had a blue moon was back in May of 2007.
