Soldier Support

"The Army prepares the troops for their mission, the families here have their mission, too, to be ready and self-sufficient and self-reliant," says Sue Sternberg, 998th Family Readiness Group Leader.

That has been her mission for the past 14 months, making sure the families of the 998th have the information and support they need while their soldiers are overseas. She retired from the 998th herself, just one month before the unit was called up.

"Which was pretty amazing and very hard for me to decide whether I was going to stay on the civilian side of it, or come out of retirement after one month and go with my military family. It was a tough year."

Sue chose not to join her former unit in Iraq, and instead put in hundreds of volunteer hours helping their families here at home, but she admits it made her feel a little left out.

"The toughest part is when the troops came back and said, 'Sue you really missed something.'"

"It was very good to work with all people from all over the world, and help the Iraqi people like they were."

Sue knows the work she and the other family support volunteers have been doing back home is very important. She reminds us that although the 998th has returned, there are still many local soldiers overseas, and that means hundreds of area families still need your support.
