This week members of the Wausau City Council will hear a proposal to ban smoking in all workplaces in the city, including restaurants, but the mayor doesn't think the current proposal is a good idea.
Jim Tipple says if a smoking ban were to happen he'd rather see it affect Wausau's neighboring communities as well.
"It would be nice if we could get a Marathon County solution, so they don't impact businesses adversely, that everybody is playing by the same rules.”
But nearby towns may not be ready for a smoking ban. Weston village administrator Dean Zuleger says residents aren't demanding a smoking ban.
"It hasn't shown up in one survey or one focus group so we'd probably take it back to our taxpayers first before we'd enter into any agreements with other governments with this.”
The Wausau Public Health and Safety Committee will hear the smoking ban proposal on Thursday.
