Construction for the new Weston YMCA has been underway for several weeks, but early Monday morning community leaders and YMCA officials formally broke ground for the 78,000 square foot facility.
The site for the YMCA is at the northeast corner of Camp Phillips road and Howland Avenue in the Village of Weston. The facility is sponsored by Community Health Care and the Woodson YMCA in downtown Wausau. The new Y will include a Community Health Care rehabilitation center, indoor track, a pool and a licensed day care facility.
"This facility is just going to be new and very state of the art, it's just going to be a great YMCA," says Tom Jackson, executive director.
As construction moves forward, funding is still short. Rising steel costs have forced the total cost of the YMCA to go up $700,000. The overall cost is $9 million; $300,000 of that final number is still needed before the facility is completed by early next year.
"We still need to raise three to four hundred thousand dollars, which on a 9 to 10 million dollar project is pretty good, we're pretty close," says Jackson.
The new facility is scheduled to open February 2005.
