It's not everyday that someone gets a helmet signed personally by Brett Favre, but then, it's not everyday you come across a story as unique as Matt Deicher's either.
Deicher, a Mosinee EMT, was seriously injured on the job while riding in an ambulance last summer. He was left paralyzed from the neck down. As a part-time employee, Matt did not have the medical coverage to pay for the expensive treatment and equipment he now needs because of his injury, so that's where fundraisers like Saturday’s come in.
Events that along with the money give Matt a great deal of hope.
"Makes you wanna go on, brings you spirits up and keeps me happy," Matt Deicher, Injured Mosinee EMT.
Proceeds from the fundraiser in Mosinee will go to buy a computer that will allow Matt to better surf the Internet and use other household appliances like the TV and telephone.
It was held at what has become the Deicher's temporary home, the Amerihost Inn, where a room was specially modified for Matt's wheelchair and rented to him at a reduced rate.
"I gave it some thought and I thought, you know what, I can make this work. I can get a couple of walls out in one of our guest rooms," said Adria Schultz, hotel manager.
Matt's family will stay in the hotel until they can afford a house that's designed to accommodate his wheelchair, something they're all hoping for, but at the moment Matt says he'll focus on the support he's already receiving and how grateful he is to have it.
"Thank you, I know thank you's not enough, we'd just like to thank everybody for all their support," said Deicher.
If you'd like to help Matt get that computer, you can make a donation at the River Valley State Bank and at the Amerihost Inn. Both are in Mosinee.
