For most growers, the fall means the end of weekly farmers markets for them to sell their goods, but that's about to change.
Saturday farmers set up shop in the Cedar Creek Mall, giving them a year-round place to do business. The enclosed space keeps them out of the elements, and brings in a lot of traffic from busy shoppers.
The Winter Market was created after organizers saw larger cities like Appleton and Milwaukee have success with them.
"I thought, 'Oh I wish we had one in Wausau', because there was still a lot of vendors that had vegetables to sell," said organizer Johanna Vang. "We'll be selling carrots, onions, potatoes, beets, and any of the other cooler crop vegetables."
Along with vegetables the market also sells cheese, pastries, and honey products. Growers are coming in from across Central Wisconsin to keep their cash flowing over the winter.
But the benefits aren't just for the farmers, consumers are also benefiting from the new market. Vendors say visiting the farmers market give you a personal connection with the grower, ensuring your food is fresh and healthy.
The Winter Market will run from 10 a-m to 2 p-m every Saturday until December 19.
