UNDATED (AP) -- Ten years ago 80,00 all-terrain vehicles were registered in the Badger State.

By the end of this year, that number will likely reach 300,000.

The Department of Natural Resources says registrations for ATVs have surpassed those for snowmobiles.

Chippewa Valley ATV Club President Gary Zanko says the popularity of ATVs is no surprise because of their versatility and year round appeal.

But, with the number of riders increasing, so does the possibility of injuries.

DNR Safety Warden Bill Yearman says injuries and deaths usually occur when the ATV rolls on top of you during an accident.

Yearman says last year there were more than 20 fatalities involving ATVs.

He says riders will be safer by wearing a helmet, staying on marked trails and keeping speeds down.
