Errol Demmerly is scheduled for a fourth competency hearing on Monday in Marathon County Court.
The 25-year-old is facing seven charges, including attempted murder for allegedly shooting at police in Rothschild two years ago.
He was found not fit to stand trial in August.
The assistant district attorney says if Demmerly's mental state isn't restored to competent by February, he'll either be put in protective placement or be mentally committed.
At that time, court proceedings would stop.
