MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Chicago college student who found a duffel bag containing more than $10,000 in cash decided to call the police -- after consulting her mother.
The 22-year-old woman was in Madison last weekend for a wedding. She and a cousin shared a cab ride from the reception back to her hotel, and he helped carry her bags from the cab to her room.
When she woke up the next morning, she found a duffel bag among her things. Turns out her cousin carried it in from the cab, thinking it was hers. And it was stuffed with cash.
After checking with mom, the woman called police. They thought it might have been drug or robbery money, but investigators discovered it belonged to a business owner who had ridden in the cab earlier.
The Madison detective who cracked the case plans to nominate the woman for a departmental citizenship award.
