Designers Touch: Acrylic Painting Techniques

Bringing out your inner artist takes practice and some good advice. Wausau artist Rita Kroeplin says it's important that you start an art project with the best brush and paint you can get. She prefers a fine liner brush and acrylic paint that doesn't fade like oil-based paints.

Kroeplin says you shouldn't be overly concerned with the first lines you draw since nothing that's real is perfect, flaws are okay.

As for how much paint to get on your brush, "Your paint should be the consistency of milk," says Kroeplin, "the thinness allows you to have a more exact edge."

Once you have an outline painted, it's important to shade with contrasting colors.

Kroeplin says, "The trick is to go from light to dark, light to dark and that's what gives you shape."

For additional guidance with your home art project, you can contact Rita at her home business, "Painted Memories" in Wausau or through the Michael's Arts and Crafts store in Rib Mountain.
