They might not be rocket scientists quite yet, but Saturday future Physics students are shooting for the stars.
The UWSP Society of Physics Students is giving back to the community by teaching kids about rocket flight. "Rocket Launch Day" helped get area elementary students excited about science by letting them build their own model rocket.
Organizers say the program helps the kids understand many of the things they're learning in school by teaching them how a rocket actually flys.
The science did go over some of the kids' heads, but they say it was still a great way to spend their day.
"I don't really know how it launches, but it's really cool to watch it launch," said 8-year-old Emma of Stevens Point.
While the kids waited for their rockets to dry, they toured the school's planetarium to learn about the life cycle of stars. Organizers say the program changes each year, depending on the season that we're in, and the location of the stars in the sky.
Kids found the actual rocket launch to be the most exciting part of the day.
