Could Governor Jim Doyle’s decision not to sign a pledge not to drink and drive impact how other lawmakers handle the oath?

Disappointed.
That’s how some area students feel after Governor Jim Doyle announced he will not sign their pledge not to drink and drive.
Some D.C. Everest Students created Lacey’s Pledge after a drunk driver killed their friend, 14-year-old Lacey Meinel, in January.
Wednesday Governor Doyle told the Lacey’s Law Committee that while he supports them, he will not sign their pledge to resign if caught drinking and driving. In a statement Doyle said he prefers voters hold him accountable for his actions.
Now students on the committee are worried about the impact his decision will have on other lawmakers.
"I'm hoping that they're going to say we should take our own path, but it might just because he is their boss and they might just say the voters should decide, not us,” said Lexi Zuleger, a member of the Lacey’s Law Committee.
Students are hoping that will not be the case.
"Just signing the pledge is such a simple measure,” said Lacey’s Law Committee member Zach Pagel. “It’s saying ‘I’m going to obey the law.’”
"I know that they are busy people. I know that they have a lot of other important issues to deal with, but you'd think that just signing a quick paper would be ok,” Zuleger said. "They should have enough knowledge to say wait a minute, 'I'm making the laws, I'm putting restrictions on these people and well, I can't even follow them myself.’"
Students are now in a waiting game to see how lawmakers will respond. They have until December 1 to sign the pledge. After the deadline passes, voters will be notified which legislators have failed to vow not to drink and drive.
So far 70 people have signed Lacey’s Pledge, but a Manitowoc representative is the only lawmaker to do so.
