MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Circuit Judge Annette Ziegler soundly defeated Madison attorney Linda Clifford today, winning a seat on the state's Supreme Court following a race that broke records for spending and saw an unprecedented flood of negative ads.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Ziegler had 482,664 votes, or 58 percent while Clifford had 346,043 votes, or 42 percent, according to unofficial returns.

Ziegler said Clifford called her to concede shortly before 10 p.m.

Ziegler told cheering supporters in West Bend that she thinks voters rejected her opponents campaign style.

As she put it, "Today I think the voters made clear that they reject negative campaigns, that those don't work and instead they want someone who sits on the court who has experience as a judge and experience in the criminal law."

Ziegler will take over as the seven-member court's newest justice on August 1.

In Mosinee, voters approved two school referendums:

1) Whether to spend $9.6 million towards new classrooms, library and a gym at Mosinee Elementary, plus to remodel Mosinee Middle School

2) Whether to spend $250,000 in operation and maintenance costs

This was the sixth school referendum on the ballot in eight years.

In Stevens Point, Andrew Halverson defeated Mike Wiza 3342-1438 to become the next mayor.

Gary Wescott, who was mayor for 12 years, opted not to seek reelection.
