School districts across Northcentral Wisconsin are keeping a close eye on students coming down with flu symptoms.

With the most recent school closure in at Elcho School District, North of Antigo, school district leaders in Langlade County are on alert.

"Over the last several weeks have really been remaining steady," says Roxann Bornemann, the Superintendent for the Antigo School District.

Superintendent Roxann Bornemann says they have been reporting daily tallies to the health department of how many of their 2,500 students call in sick with flu-like symptoms.

"Right now were at 9-10% which isn't a great concern for me overall but by building and monitoring it carefully too," says Superintendent Bornemann.

She's recommending if they're sick to stay home no matter what.

"If you are ill with a seasonal flu you need to stay home for 24 hours after the flu fever is gone without using any kind of fever reducing medicines," says Bornemann.

This comes just in time for little ones who may be needing a rest, area schools have fall break this Thursday and Friday.

"It's built into our calendar, yes it's vacation days so were actually in a nice way going to have a break without having to plan it because of the flu," says Bornemann.

The Health Department Director says during the time students are away, any flu virus on the surfaces should die off by the time kids go back to school Monday.

"They can wash the surfaces if they want but if the building is closed, and nobody is getting access to those surfaces it should be OK," says Holly Matucheski with the Langlade County Health Department.

The Health Director and Superintendent say they're working hard to keep their doors open and for students to stay healthy this season.

"Were telling them to eat a proper diet get enough reset and use precaution wash your hands wash your hands," says Matucheski.
