While many parents are worrying about their children's health these days, some people in our area are concerned about something they consider a much bigger problem, pornography. Concerned citizens gathered Sunday for a White Ribbon Rally to discuss the harm it can create in our community.

Morality in Media of Marathon County is looking to inform the public of the negative effect pornography is having on communities. In fact, they say pornography is a main cause of many of the area's problems.

President of the organization Ron Putzer says, "many people know that we are having a lot of problems with sex offenders, and some of that comes from pornography either in the media or over the Internet. This is effecting our community."

Sunday the group discussed different ways of controlling the amount of pornography in the community. It can be found not only online, but magazines in local stores around the area.

They say by contacting local legislators and boycotting businesses that distribute pornography, you can cut down on its negative side effects.

"It's used in commercials and books to sell and try and make more money, but nobody realizes the devastation it leaves behind because it is corrupting the morality of our country," said Putzer.

With pornography bringing in more than 13 billion dollars each year in the U.S. alone, it's safe to say sex sells. But is it hurting our communities?

"Definitely on the media I think there's way too much pornography or graphic violence," said Jana Schroepfer of Antigo, but Jennifer Umlauf of Minocqua disagreed.

"I don't think there's really that much more than anything else."

With mixed reactions from the public, the organization says they will continue to educate others of pornography's effects and write to lawmakers to keep it out of our communities.

HUH,"Adults are suppose to be responsible, if they are not, they pay the price Some adults are not responsible,so,prevention-prevention-prevention-BEFORE the child gets molested. It's difficult to undo the damage that these perverts do, why not stop it where it starts? Or should we let the children "pay the price" as you say?

It is good to address this issue. Thank you Morality in the Media. Pornography comes with no positive side, except some will argue it is profitable. It becomes an addiction, it causes degrading images of women, and it ruins families and marriages, and leads to depression. It should be limited and controlled. We attack smoking statewide because of it's negative effects, but we don't think porn is negative? Let's get real.

In local stores? Are they talking about the magazines in grocery and discount stores that have cleavage showing on the front covers of women's magazines? If so, then why don't they recommend putting diapers on people's pets so we don't see their "naughty" bits? If they are talking about the adult book stores, then it's a different matter. Those crusaders can sit outside the adult book stores and harass the customers that go into those places.
