March Madness an Addiction?

Tip off for March Madness is less than 24 hours away. The bracket fest is already making its rounds through offices, colleges, homes, and wherever college hoops fans may be.

The NCAA tournament brings an array of fun, excitement, and betting. Though betting is illegal, many say it's a long-standing tradition.

"We get together and chip in five, ten bucks a piece, and the winner takes all. That's what it's all about," says a local college hoops fan.

But the betting can sometimes get out of hand. The Wisconsin Council on Compulsive Gambling says more than 150,000 Wisconsin residents are addicted to gambling. Here are some red flags:

  • Did you ever lose time from work or school due to gambling?

  • Has gambling ever made your home life unhappy?

  • Do you have compulsive behavior like alcoholism or drug addiction?

  • After losing, did you feel you must return as soon as possible and try to win back your loses?

If any of these signs apply to you, call 1-800-GAMBLE-5.
