Fire broke out around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning on the 500 block of Chicago Avenue in Wausau. Flames could be seen through a window on the second floor of the brick house.
According to Wausau fire chief Gary Buchberger, fire crews started attacking the fire from inside the building. That's when they found the victim, a 39-year-old woman, on the second floor.
Buchberger says that prompted them to call in the state fire marshall.
"It's standard procedure in any fire that involves either a firefighter casualty or a victim. State fire marshalls called when there's a fatality.”
It's not clear yet if the woman died from the fire or was already dead when the fire broke out. Officials are not releasing her name until they can notify the family. Along with the state fire marshall, the Wausau Fire and Police Departments are helping with the investigation.
