The loss of jobs to other countries, also known as outsourcing, is a big problem in the United States, but in our area it's the importing of a product from another country that's raising concerns.
Anderson Brothers and Johnson Quarries in Wausau are granite suppliers for companies that make headstones.
A manager at Anderson Brothers says Chinese companies are undercutting their prices because they don't have to play by the same regulatory rules and can pay their workers far less than American companies.
"The biggest thing I look at is follow the money. Where does the money end up?" said Tom Ellias, of Anderson Brothers and Johnson. "If it ends up in the U.S., hey, that's fine with me. If it goes over seas, now I guess I got a problem with that."
Ellias says consumers should ask their retailer where the granite for the headstone came from and ask to see a manufacturer's seal.
