Sheriff's deputies are calling it one of the largest organized drug growing operations in the state history, and it was found on state land.
Authorities spent a good chunk of the week removing the plants from the Navarino Wildlife Area South of Shawano.
Nestled in the Navarino Wildlife Area, authorities say was a nearly five acre marijuana operation. Investigators removed 8,000 plants Tuesday as well as four abandoned camp and production sites.
Removing the plants took 78 law enforcement officials from 9 different local, state and federal agencies. The scope of the operation is something many haven't seen in the state.
Authorities received a tip from a hunter a few weeks ago about the operation, which they say they have been monitoring since.
The 12 separate grow sites were scattered in remote parts of the wildlife area. Authorities estimate they had been running since Spring.
Shawano County's Sheriff says it could have been a dangerous situation if someone would have come across the operation while it was still occupied.
Shawano County authorities busted a similar operation last year near Gresham.

Funny thing is....I live about 8 miles where the bust took place. Everyone that burns around the area clamed right up
Has anyone ever been killed by a person driving a car or machinery? Don't these dummies know that impaired driving is illeagle for a safty reason? Can't they just get a life?
As a tax paying American citizen with a professional career. I find it the largest waste of tax payers' money to hunt down and destroy already harvested marijuana fields. The problem is that people are growing marijuana on PUBLIC lands. If we allowed Americans to grow marijuana for personal use in their own back yards and homes; we would a) stop people from wrecking my hunting land, b) end the Mexican Drug Cartels' main profit flow, and c) allow our police to actually do something worth while. Marijuana is proven a safer substance than alcohol; a substance our state glorifies. Think about it and don't take the advice parent groups and government funded drug organizations tout about how marijuana is the ill it has been preached for the past 70 years. Also, if you support medicinal marijuana, tell you legislator to support "The Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act"! 13 states have voted to allow their citizens the right to grow their own medicine... C'mon Wisconsin!
