An expert on religion says the Neumanns may have become too focused on one way of thinking in their religious beliefs, and that may have ultimately contributed to their daughter's death.
The UW-MC Professor says after watching the case unfold, he believes the Weston couple may have surrounded themselves with people with just one view of medicine and religion.
Whether it's about Buddhism, Islam, or Christianity, Associate Professor James Veninga likely knows the teachings.
But he tells me it's difficult to pin-point exactly when belief in religion turns to fanaticism about God and the rest of the world.
Veninga says although he doesn't know the Neumann's personally, he believes they reached a certain point in their thought process where doctors took a back seat to faith healing.
He says this can happen when you only surround yourself with just one train of thought.
That limited their ability to understand how...modern medicine could indeed be used to indeed help their daughter," says Associate Professor James Veninga.
The Professor says while this case has captured the attention of people across the globe, studies show most people are actually becoming more tolerant of other religions, not less.
He also says, while many mainstream churches have actually lost members over the years, other smaller, home-grown churches are beginning to gain strength.

MAYBE too focused on their religion? - are you kidding ?- has anyone looked at their web site? - they are cuckoo and to my mind need help and a reality check in a major way.
This makes me sick. I'm all for religon and praying for your loved ones. But to watch your child die and do nothing about it. Then get a slap on the wrist for not taking care of their responsibility. I do believe that is involuntary manslaughter should have a deeper punishment. I'm sure they meant no harm and didnt mean for this to happen, but either does a person who has one drink and gets it for vehicular homicide while intoxicated, but they get a minimum of atleast, what, 5 years. Seriously. A drug dealer gets more time for selling marijuana without a death involved versus what the neumann's got. That's pathetic. I don't feel that the judge weighed his decision right. Now anyone who's child dies from neglect can cry it's in their religious rights. Common sense was a great gift from God, but no one seems to use it.
Are we prosecuting the Nuemans for their faith or persicuting the Nuemans for their's? Think about it Chritians.
