"Every person in this country has freedom of religion. There is no excuse anyone to deny this family the freedom of religion. As devistating as this was there is just no excuse for anyone to deny these people of their Constitutional Rights. If that family chooses to pray instead of go to a doctor, that is their choice. I disagree with their ... Read Morechoice to pray instead of visit a doctor, but on the other hand I agree with the judge and jury that what they did was their right as American citizens. The day you try and force your religion on someone is the day you go against our Constitution! Think about that the next time you are forced to give up something the Constitution grants you the right to do."
"I am so glad because they dont deserve to be in jail at all not even 30days but I am sure leilani and dale will start a prison ministry :) God is good all the time!!!"
"Dale and Lelaini did not know that ... Read Moretheir daughter was diabetic. They did not go to the doctor. Maybe they would have chose to treat her differently had they known...maybe they wouldn't have. Either way...it's not a crime. Maybe a poor decision, that if they could take back, I'm sure they would. But nevertheless, not a crime."
"I see this situation both ways, for every crime there should be some form of justice, especially in a murder case, and i cant speak of behalf of their other kids, but maybe those kids should be taken out of that family, as part of their sentence. But ... as opinion plays too big of a role in this sentence, and either way ... Read Morepeople would have been unhappy. But to say these people diserve a life sentence or even as one person put it, death sentence, is far too much. I think jail time is needed, and 6 months sounds good enough, and by the time the probation is over, the kids will be 18 or a little under, and will be able to make their own decisions."
"Personaly knowing Kara she was a great girl loved to swim and be with friends! I watched her grow up. She was the sweetest little girl. But Dale and Leilani had the responsiblity to keep her safe and they did not do that. And all for their religion im sorry but i think if my child was not eating i would take them to the doctor to find out what was ... Read Morewrong. No one is saying that prayng was bad. But prayer can only go so far. God wouldnt have given the knowledge to these doctors and nurses for nothing. They always took their children to the doctors so why not now? But in the end this was about the loss of a child and that is not excusable. They should have gotten more than a month a year in jail. There are going to be more cases like this and parents are going to argue and say that i prayed and get off with a slap on the wrist. I believe they should have went to Jail and they should not have custody of their kids. If they both stated in their trials that they would do nothing differently why would they let them home with their kids? No compassion for these two."

"I do not understand Judge Howard's decision on this case. They should have received a much harsher sentence than they did. I was diagnosed with diabetes almost 8 years ago and I know that with the right treatment, medication and watching my sugar levels and what I eat, diabetes can and is very controllable. Even people who mistreat animals get more punishment than these people did. I can't believe they have the audacity to appeal this sentence. They should be grateful this was all they got. Apparently, their daughter did not mean that much to them. God help their other children. They are going to need all the help possible."
"If the neumanns lied to the judge about going to visit a sick Grandma, and then went out East can we really trust anything else they say? That little girl was innocent and deserved to be taken care of the best way possible. Their sentences were not harsh enough."
"This is so wrong on so many levels. If they were truly of faith, wouldn't the thought that God gave us doctors for a reason - so we didn't have to suffer as much as we really physically could. Considering that this is sending the message you can kill your kid through negligence or just choosing not to be responsible but don't drink and drive because you'll go to jail from anywhere 3 years to the rest of your life. What kind of message is this sending. I'm also going to pressume that that their children didn't have vaccicination, therefore, once again not only putting their children at risk but everyone else. I do believe in freedom of religion but this is just rediculious - even the Amish know when it's time seek medical help and they are as simple as they come."
"I can not beleive that anyone could let their child die before your eyes knowing that medical help is only a call away. Would of been a different story if the poor child had some incurable disease. But come on people it was only diabeties. What the heck kind of a sentence is this, and what does this tell other sick people out there. And now they want to appeal the sentence. Make them use their own money to do this, instead of us tax payers having to flip the bill. I am totally angry with this, and Tim you are right, this is like a speeding ticket punishment."
"take care of your other children and i hope you learned a lesson you have a second chance in life do something with it we shouldn't judge you but other will take care and remember your children you have. go take flowers to your daughter and tell her your sorry for not taking her to the docter sooner."
So what do you think? Was the sentence Judge Howard gave them enough? Was it too little? What do you think?

im so out raged as a parent, i know the lawyers the judge and da did there jobs. but the only thing that was never brought up was life insurance on Kara they had a business houses, and now they are broke to bad cry me a river. Leilani finally cried and showed she had feelings. but now its too late her daughter is gone, there child they let die, im a mom and i love my kids i protect them. i would give my life for them. Dale and Leilani i do pity you both cause one day uou will go to heaven and let your daughter ask you both mom and dad why did you let me die i hate you both, may god have mercy on your souls cause alot of people will not,
Absolute disgrace, these people put their own superstitious beliefs before the welfare of their child. They show absolutely no remorse and are indeed guilty of negligent homicide. What would this obviously Christian judge have to say if the couple were not praying to his particular brand of 'Lord' and said they were pagans following an ancient healing ritual? Would he have been so lenient then? I doubt it, somehow.
They should have been sentenced to 15 years and then mandatory mental therapy. People have the right to religion but, Children are not old enough to make a decision on what religion they follow (if any) or how they will follow, and they are very susceptible to intimidation and/or impression by their parents. They are not making an informed choice and even if they were, are they going to drive themselves to the hospital when mom and dad refuse? Ignorance is not an excuse to break a law, not a traffic ticket and certainly not manslaughter. Serious review should be done of this case and this Judge.
