Homeland Security Shortfalls

The Office of Homeland Security has been improving fire and police departments across central Wisconsin, but some local officials say not in the areas that need it most.

Wausau Assistant Fire Chief Mike Pierce says the money from homeland security has improved things like HAZMAT and fire and rescue teams, but has done little for the more basic emergency medical services.

"So you have to attend to the basic service to make sure it's there to enhance, so you can cycle it up in the event of some homeland security incident." said Asst. Chief Mike Pierce, Wausau Police Department.

Pierce says EMS teams are important because they would be one of the first groups to respond to a terror attack.
