Tanker Accident Shuts Down I-39

As of 7:00 p.m. Monday night, I-39 was open for traffic.

A five-mile stretch between Highway 34 and Highway 153 was closed as Hazmat crews cleaned up a gas spill.

Around 1 a.m. Monday a gas truck with a full load went into the ditch south of Mosinee. According to the Marathon County Sheriff's Department the driver was talking on his cell phone at the time and drifted off the road.

About 1,500 gallons of gas spilled into the ditch, and the Marathon County Hazmat Team decided to pump out the 7,000 gallons of gas remaining in the truck before trying to move it.

A thunderstorm and lightning prevented the crews from starting their work until morning.

Southbound and Northbound lanes of traffic were closed and traffic was detoured around the area on County Highway X and Old Highway 51. This created long lines of traffic on country roads in the area.

A trailer park less than a 1,000 feet from the accident site was notified of the crash and given the option to evacuate.

Area Fire Departments assisted the Hazmat crews cover the spill in a foam that prevented in from igniting.

When the tanker was empty, I-39 southbound was re-opened, around 1:30 p.m. The tanker wasn't cleared from the ditch until just before six.
