Chemical Found Near Derailment

The state says a caustic chemical was found in soil near where a train derailed in Washington County Monday.

The Department of Natural Resources says the 34 derailed cars spilled wax and diesel fuel into a wetland.

The 107-car train carrying hazardous materials derailed yesterday afternoon and ignited a fire that sent smoke billowing into the sky.

DNR spokeswoman Kathleen Wolski says the wax and diesel fuel did some damage to the nearby wetland.

But, she says specialists couldn't get close enough to the site to determine the extent of the damage. That's because the remaining wreckage still needs to get cleared away, which is expected to take 36 hours.

No one was hurt during the derailment. Only two people were on board.
