Senators to Consider Concealed Weapons Bill

The concealed weapons bill would allow people to apply for a permit to carry a hidden gun in public. The Badger State Sheriff's Association is asking state senators to uphold Gov. Doyle's veto of the bill.

"We have some significant concerns about the way the administrative portion, the background investigations, etc. play out in this legislation," says Wood County Sheriff Kurt Heuer, president of the association.

Sheriffs say if the law passes they'll be forced to assign more staff to background checks and the permitting process. That means they'll have less officers to focus on criminal cases and crime prevention.

Russ Decker and Julie Lassa are among the four senators who have not said which way they will vote on the override.
