Although the Blood Center in Northern Central Wisconsin has adequate supply, they're doing what they can to assist blood banks in other parts of the country. In some areas, the low inventory has meant canceling or postponing some elective surgeries.

"If we tend to draw more than we need locally, we'll share it with other centers across the United States," says Diane Carlson, Blood Center of North Central Wisconsin.

Carlson says the shortage happens this time of year, every year, usually after the holidays. It picks up again towards the end of January. If you're willing to donate, the center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
