Crash Scene Investigation

Authorities say it could be weeks before we learn what happened in a Marathon County accident that killed three people Thursday afternoon.

This weekend we talked with local law enforcement to find out what goes on during a crash investigation.

Investigators say it takes weeks to piece together wrecks like the one that took place last Thursday on Highway 51.

Looking at information gathered at the scene from skid marks, to radiator fluid spatter, to the final resting position of the vehicles. Officials gather crucial information for court hearings and insurance companies.

"Because it's always somewhat of a mystery you wanna know why the crash occurred," said Deputy James Toth, "and with these reconstruction tools we can do that."

Toth also says new equipment helps speed up the process. On average, the marathon county sheriffs department takes about two to the weeks to complete most investigations.
