You may already notice some of the leaves in your backyard changing from green, to bright yellows, oranges, and reds.
It's one of the most beautiful times of year in Northcentral Wisconsin, and a time the little ones enjoy, once the leaves begin to fall.
Before the beautiful weather we have now changes, there's something we all have to look forward to.
Paul Whitaker, a UWMC Biology Professor says, "The leaves change colors as a bi-product of getting ready for winter, so there's a little zone where the leaf attaches to the stem. The trees prepare to drop their leaves by sealing off that zone."
The Professor explains that chlorophyll makes leaves the shade green, then breaks down everyday in the sunlight, making these beautiful, vibrant colors.
Something many of the kids at St. Michael's Elementary School are familiar with.
Tegan Peters a first grader says, "The leaves turn orange, red, and yellow."
Mike Hahn, also a first grader says, "When the leaves change everybody knows that it's a different season."
Some of the first graders explain how they plan to take advantage of the fall.
TJ Condon says, "My dad always makes a pile with his tractor and then I jump into the leaves. Sometimes I try to scare my sister and she comes by and I'll grab her leg."
Nolan Patneaude, says, "I sometimes pick leaves and put them in my leaf collection. I have this big long box with colored leaves."
But Professor Whitaker warns this year, seeing beautiful colors, may not last, because of the below average rainfall Northcentral Wisconsin has experienced this summer.
He says, "Much of Northern Wisconsin is still under pretty severe drought conditions so that will cause the leaves to drop off earlier and the color might not be as cool."
