On Monday, millions of Americans celebrated Labor Day, and that means taking a day off to celebrate a year of hard work.
But in Wisconsin Rapids, laborers are giving back to the community, with the 7th annual Labor Day Celebration.
"We just try to do a community event to bring all the working men and women out who have a day off," says Ron Holden, President of the Wood County Central Labor Council.
And since 2003, that's exactly what the Labor Day Committee has done.
People from labor unions from across the area put on the event, which features lots of food, games for the kids, and live music.
Holden adds, "I think a lot of people have a good time, it's a great community event, we put it on for the community, we want everybody in the community to come out, have a good day off, and have something to eat and have a good time."
But among the hundreds of people who came to Robinson Park for the food, games, and fun, there was one visitor who stood out to most.
"I always like to come here, it's a good event and you get a chance to talk to people," says 7th District Congressman Dave Obey.
And a chance to share their concerns with their Congressman is something that the people of Wisconsin Rapids feel is important.
"It gives them a good feel of what labor's doing, what the working men and women around town are doing, and gives them a chance just to mingle with them," says Holden.
Congressman Obey adds, "I think it's very important to talk to them about their stake in the healthcare debate. The fact is, you will not see wage increases for workers in this country anymore unless we get a handle on healthcare costs."
And in between explaining to locals how his reform hopes to change that, and fielding their concerns, Obey also found some time to enjoy himself.
"Any time you can have a beer and have a hot dog, that's not a bad day," he says.
State Senator Julie Lassa, Representative Amy Sue Vruwink, and Representative Louis Molepske were also in attendance.
