Powerline Debate

Marathon County officials will meet in the next couple of days with American Transmission Company which is building the line. The company is hoping to use 1.5 miles of land in the Nine Mile Recreation area. ATC has applied for that location in the past, but was turned down twice.

"We determined that this was not the best alternative for this kind of power transmission line and we still haven't seen any evidence that it's the best alternative," says Mort McBain, Marathon County Administrator.

McBain says they're willing to look at the issue again and say if there's enough evidence, they could approve it. ATC officials say they're meeting in Wausau to answer any questions the county may have and to talk about next steps in the process.

An organization known as SOUL, or Save Our Unique Lands, is against the power line and locating part of it at Nine Mile.
