Online School Problems

Plans to start two online public schools in Wisconsin this fall are hitting some problems.

A company called K-12 wants to start the Wisconsin Virtual Academy for students from across the state.

And, the Appleton School District plans to start the Wisconsin Connections Academy, a kindergarten through eighth grade virtual school for 300 children across the state using curriculum from Sylvan Ventures.

But the state's teachers union has filed notice that it is challenging the legality of the school.

Union officials say private companies and school districts could make major profits by supplying education for less than the state aid amount.

A spokesman for the Virginia-based K-12, that is trying to start one of the schools, says time is running out to open the school this fall.
