Students Miss Class to Spread Holiday Cheer

At first glance, it might look like Spencer skip day, but rest assured, it's not what you think.

Thirty-two students made rounds around Spencer, spreading holiday cheer to the elderly. They handed out gifts of apples and oranges as a way of saying thanks for the contributions they've made to the community.

They hit 125 homes, passing those boxes out and even doing a little bit of caroling, and learning that giving can be every bit as good as receiving.

"I do this because it's a great way to get out and see everybody's faces and the elderly people, to bring them joy and happiness and the holiday spirit," says Kay Gallion, a Spencer High senior.

Other groups are helping out to make all this happen. The Spencer FFA, chamber of commerce, and United Way are just a few. Some donated the fruit, others made cookies, all part of a real community effort.
