Chelsi Mindykowski says she doesn't mind moving into the Holiday Inn instead of a dorm room at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

She's one of about 100 students who will live at the downtown hotel this fall because a shortage of dorm space.

The university has contracted with local hotels to house students for seven of the last eight years.

The sophomore from Ladysmith says at the hotel, she'll get free parking, her own bathroom, and access to the pool and exercise areas.

She's one of about half the students who volunteered to live at the hotel this fall.

Chuck Major, the university's director of housing and residence life, says the Holiday Inn offered the lowest bid to house all 100 students. It means switching furniture and installing a university phone system for the students.

Students will pay the same rate as those in the residence halls -- around $2,300 per semester.
