Let it snow, let it snow, and let the cash registers go crazy. That's what area hardware store owners are saying Tuesday night, as what could be the first major snowstorm of the year makes its way through.

If that's the case, expect shovels, ice scrapers and all that winter stuff to be quite popular Wednesday.

Typically, it takes one good shot of snow before the sales start to soar. Tough to say exactly why. Maybe it's nature's way of reminding you that you actually need supplies to make it through a winter here, or there are a lot of people among us who just don't like to think about it.

"People are generally procrastinators, as we've said," says Tim Grebe of Grebe's Hardware. "Tomorrow morning, they'll go out for the shovel and it's broke, or the handle is cracked, the edge is off, they'll remember that they should've replaced it last fall."

If the snow is heavy enough, Grebe expects to sell a few snow blowers. Otherwise, if it's just a dusting, he says he'll probably get rid of some shovels.
