The standoff in the town of Rome continues, as the Town Chairman read a statement Friday announcing they will not change their minds about hiring a new fire chief.
The police and fire commission decided to hire an Illinois man for the new full time fire chief position last July.
Twenty-four of the 26 volunteer firefighters resigned in protest because the current chief was not promoted. Their last day is Aug. 8.
The new chief will start four days later.
The town of Rome will rely on mutual aid agreements for fire protection until new volunteers are trained.
